Starring in a prime-time television show as president of the United States, Donald Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday to be the next justice of the Supreme Court.
LeeAnn Hall and George Goehl, co-directors of People’s Action, provided this response:
“Trump said during his address, ‘I am a man of my word; I do what I say.’ In that respect it is no surprise that the man he has chosen to be Supreme Court justice is a man who has ruled against the rights of women and LGBTQ people, and who has upheld systems of structural racism and corporate unaccountability.
“But a promise to appoint a Supreme Court justice whose record shows he will not defend the powerless and marginalized, whose view of “originalism” embraces a history and culture of racism, sexism and corporate greed, is a promise that should not be kept. It is also a promise to which the Senate must not give its consent.
“We will do everything in our power to pressure the Senate to vote against Gorsuch, or any Supreme Court nominee who will lock in the extremism of the Trump administration for generations to come. We applaud those senators who have vowed to filibuster Gorsuch, and encourage them to stand strong.”
