People’s Action Institute is actively training and coaching grassroots leaders around the country to form tenant unions and win protections from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). In November of 2023, we brought over 100 tenants who have experienced rent hikes to Washington, D.C., where they led a briefing on our housing crisis for the U.S. Congress and met with FHFA leadership.

The federal government does $150 billion in business with landlords every year. Yet in the wake of COVID and an unprecedented transfer of public money to private housing providers, landlords increasingly hold the upper hand over tenants, denying repairs and demanding egregious rent hikes.
