Maryland now has, for the first time in history, a Black woman representing The Free State in the U.S. Senate, thanks to an all-out effort by the members of Progressive Maryland, who left no stone unturned to elect Angela Alsobrooks to the seat.
“With Angela Alsobrooks’ victory, we’ve made history and upheld the values that Marylanders care deeply about,” said Larry Stafford, Executive Director of Progressive Maryland. “This Senate seat is critical to the future of our democracy, and I couldn’t be prouder of our volunteers and supporters who made this possible.”
Progressive Maryland pulled out all the stops to build support for Alsobrooks to defeat Larry Hogan, the state’s Republican former governor. They reached more than 335,000 voters through canvassing, phone-banking, social media and community engagement. They led 14 volunteer canvassing days of action across Maryland’s key areas and 22 phone banks, in the largest independent expenditure operation outside of Alsobrooks’ campaign.
“Through our GOTV work and a powerful media push to highlight Hogan’s harmful past leadership decisions, we worked tirelessly to prevent him from taking this critical seat,” said Christianne Marguerite, Communications Director. “We are proud of our success in ensuring that Maryland’s working families are now represented by someone who truly stands for our interests, not partisan ideology.”

In Baltimore City, 62 percent of voters rejected a ballot measure funded by David Smith, the billionaire owner of the right-wing Sinclair Media television franchise, to reduce the size of the city council from 14 to eight members. This is the first time a ballot initiative has failed to pass in Baltimore in 25 years.
“We built a coalition called Baltimore Cities Not For Sale that included a number of labor organizations, the teachers and the health care workers, all the organizations in the metro AFL-CIO, and community organizations like us,” said Max Socol, who organized with the effort in Baltimore “So we’re very proud to have beaten our own local horrible billionaire.”
