A statement from Josie Mooney, director of organizing for People’s Action:

“The unconscionable decision today in Janus v. AFSCME highlights how wealthy special interests abuse the Supreme Court to keep workers trapped at the bottom. We know that by standing together we are stronger. Wealthy corporations and billionaires know that keeping us divided protects their own profits and power.

“People’s Action stands with our union brothers and sisters. We work fearlessly every day to build an economy that puts people before corporate profits, and to make sure all workers are treated with dignity, paid fair wages and have healthcare and other benefits that sustain families.

“We all benefit from the contracts negotiated by unions, whether we are union members or not, as they set the standards for workers everywhere. We take for granted the forty-hour work week or paid sick leave, but these are victories won by working people and their unions.

“We know from generations of experience that we can’t always trust profit-driven corporations to act in the interest of their employees – especially employees who are women and people of color.

“Workers in America won’t be trapped into a race to the bottom. We will not become complacent: we will stand together, with teachers, nurses, transportation and communication workers, and all union workers to do what we do best – organize. This is not the end. This is the beginning of a new insurgent labor movement and we are proud to stand with our brothers and sisters to help build it.

Josie Mooney, organizing director for People’s Action, is one of California’s most influential labor leaders, having worked for SEIU for more than 25 years. She was the only woman President of the San Francisco Labor Council for more than a decade. She has deep roots as a community organizer fighting for economic and racial justice.

People’s Action is a bold progressive multiracial working class network of more than one million grassroots leaders, with 48 member organizations and 600 local staff across 30 states.

About People’s Action

People’s Action is a national network of 38 state and local grassroots, power-building organizations united in fighting for justice. Our organization recently released a vision for a national Homes Guarantee that has already prompted major legislation from champions including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. We operate the largest progressive rural organizing project in the country. Prior to endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, we completed a national forum series that The Nation called “the most in-depth, people-powered forum” of the 2020 cycle.”
