WASHINGTON, D.C.—People’s Action today release the following statements in anticipation of President Biden’s executive orders on climate, housing, and immigration:
Climate
“The Biden administration’s commitment to act on climate and revoke the Keystone XL pipeline’s permit are encouraging first steps in the direction of climate and environmental justice,” People and Planet First Campaigns Director Kaniela Ing said. “We will keep fighting to make sure President Biden does not rest on these laurels, and we need him to be even bolder. Any plan must put people and our planet first by centering the frontline communities who have been fighting pollution for years and are being hit first and worst by the consequences of climate change. And he could start by immediately ending permits for Line 3 in Minnesota and the Dakota Access Pipeline.”
Housing
“It would have been easy to improve the failed Trump moratorium, and Biden should have done so,” Housing Guarantee Campaign Director Tara Raghuveer said. “Choosing not to will come at the cost of human life. Extending the current CDC policy does not actually end evictions, particularly in states with weaker protections like Missouri and Kentucky. Biden’s decision means that courts around the country will continue to hear evictions and force tenants to the streets while the pandemic rages on. Congress must now go further, soon, to end all evictions.”
Immigration
“We applaud President Biden for keeping his promise and creating a roadmap to citizenship for every person who calls this country home, and we need to ensure that happens without any tradeoffs or political games. Biden must dismantle the cruelty of the Trump administration and work with Congress to build a just immigration system. After organizing our communities in every critical battleground state to get us here, we need Biden to finish the job, and we’ll help him at every step,” Senior Strategist Mehrdad Azemun said.
