National Organizing Network Cheers Walz Record on Workers’ Rights, Climate Justice, and Education
WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today cheered news that Vice President Kamala Harris will select Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential pick on the 2024 Democratic ticket. Citing Walz’s record on workers, families, climate, and democracy, leaders of the organization expressed enthusiasm about the signals sent by Harris to poor and working class people by selecting a progressive Democratic governor as her running mate. People’s Action recently endorsed Harris for president, and updated their endorsement today to include Walz.
“Tim Walz has the most progressive record of any Democratic statewide elected official in the country,” People’s Action Executive Director Sulma Arias said. “Walz and organizers in Minnesota have set a high bar for what elected officials and movements can do when we win governing power. From setting his state on a path to get off fossil fuels and restoring voting rights for formerly incarcerated people to defending workers’ and immigrants’ rights, Walz is leading the way among his Democratic peers.”
“Our members across the 29 states where we organize were watching this choice closely,” Arias added. “By choosing Walz as a running mate, Vice President Harris is sending them a powerful message about her vision for the future. Walz has demonstrated his ability to bring voters together around a positive vision for the future, and we need that skill to beat Trump and his billionaire allies in 2024.”
“LFG–if you know, you know,” People’s Action Board Chair Juanita Lewis added. “Under Tim Walz, organizers in our movement and the officials they elected passed bill after bill to protect our families, our freedoms, and our futures. This is a big signal from Harris to progressives: it’s go time.”
Citing the governor’s responsiveness to Minnesota organizers, TakeAction Minnesota Executive Director Elianne Farhat said: “Governor Walz has demonstrated a remarkable ability to evolve as a public leader, uniting Democrats’ diverse coalition to achieve significant milestones for Minnesota families of all backgrounds.”
TakeAction Minnesota is an affiliate of People’s Action and a statewide, multiracial grassroots organization advancing justice and equity through organizing, policy, and campaigns.
People’s Action previously joined with Working Families Party and Center for Popular Democracy Action to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for president, and the organization plans to double its massive 2020 voter outreach efforts, especially those using deep canvassing, to elect Vice President Harris and down-ballot champions for working people and defeat Trump and MAGA Republicans in battleground districts across the country.
