WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today endorsed a slate of three California city- and county-level candidates for election. The candidates are running movement politics, people-powered campaigns and will fight for the People’s Action People’s Platform once elected. Each of these candidates is also endorsed by either People’s Action’s San Francisco member organization, San Francisco Rising Action Fund (SFRAF), or by SFRAF’s affiliate, Coleman Action Fund for Children.
Today’s endorsees include:
- Kevine Boggess for San Francisco Board of Education
- Connie Chan for San Francisco City and County Board of Supervisors, District 1
- John Avalos for San Francisco City and County Board of Supervisors, District 11
“People’s Action is proud to work with San Francisco Rising Action Fund to endorse these candidates, especially now,” People’s Action Director of Movement Governing Brooke Adams said. “We’re living through unprecedented economic and racial crises, whose solutions demand leadership from people who understand what it’s like to be part of the multiracial working class and who will fight for justice. These candidates are champions who will always put people over profit and protect our planet. The San Francisco corporate elite should be shaking.”
Kevine Boggess – San Francisco Board of Education
Kevine Boggess has worked to transform and advance equity in San Francisco public schools for nearly a decade. He served as the Education Policy Director at Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, working to transform the schools through policy change at a local, state and national level. In this role, Kevine spends each week at school sites and with district students, families, teachers and administrators to understand the conditions in our schools, and support young people and families in fighting for improvements in the system of education.
“For almost ten years, as Education Policy Director at Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, I have worked to address racial and economic disparities in the public schools and center the voices of students, families and educators,” Boggess said. “I’m a graduate of San Francisco Unified School District and the parent of a child who will soon be entering the public school system. I am honored to receive the endorsement of People’s Action, who is committed to building the power of working class people of color for transformative change.”
Connie Chan – San Francisco City and County Board of Supervisors, District 1
Connie Chan immigrated to San Francisco with her mom and brother at the age of 13 and thanks to the city’s smart and progressive policies, her family was able to grow and thrive here. She has committed herself to give back to the city over her 15 years of public service, and she is running for District 1 Supervisor because of what the city has given her and her family – and because she wants those same opportunities to be available for all San Franciscans now and for generations to come.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of People’s Action because they too understand the social and economic impacts of this crisis will be devastating and far-reaching, and the time for social justice and equality is now,” Chan said.
John Avalos – San Francisco City and County Board of Supervisors, District 11
John Avalos is a union organizer with the National Union of Healthcare Workers, and a former two-term Supervisor of San Francisco’s District 11, one of the last working class neighborhoods left in the city. John is third-generation Chicano, has lived in District 11 for 22 years, is raising two teenagers, and is engaged to Raquel Redondiez. As former Budget Chair of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, John helped lead San Francisco out of the Great Recession, and he is running for office again to prioritize essential workers, low-income folks and communities of color towards a Just Recovery out of a pandemic and economic recession. He is formally the chair of Local Progress, a movement of local elected officials advancing a racial and economic justice agenda through all levels of local government.
“We are so excited to have the People’s Action endorsement to continue to work with community to build racial, gender, and economic equity through all levels of government and to fight for our communities of color,” Avalos said.
People’s Action’s Movement Politics program recruits, runs, and elects progressives into local and statewide offices across the country. Since 2016, People’s Action has helped elect over 350 movement politics candidates. The program focuses on electing women, people of color, and low-income people who are grounded in progressive movement building with our member organizations.
