WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today condemned Trump’s continued persecution of Rep. Omar as a desperate, immoral attempt to change the subject as his failures threaten to cause a historic wipeout for his party on Nov. 2. Working class voters, furious over the Iran war and out-of-control costs, are set to hand the House and possibly the Senate to Democrats within days, and the White House is scrambling to change the media narrative to a topic other than his catastrophic poll numbers.
“Trump can’t hide the harm he’s done to all of us by persecuting Rep. Ilhan Omar,” People’s Action Executive Director Sulma Arias said. “He is escalating his decade-long obsession with attacking Rep. Omar because he is losing. If he thinks he can escape the political consequences of his vicious, greedy, corrupt behavior by changing the subject, he’s wrong.”
“Trump’s illegitimate use of federal law enforcement power to try to target and intimidate his political opponents and rile up his base violates the Constitution at its very core,” Arias continued. “His attempts to scapegoat Rep. Omar and Somali Americans are consistent with his strategy to blame Muslims and people of color for his failed policies that are driving up costs and inequality. The polls are clear: it’s not working anymore.”
The pre-dawn raid on a political opponent 22 days before the elections comes while Republicans have been forced to defend a widening number of previously safe districts as voters reject the outcomes of the MAGA agenda. As CNN reports this morning: “Despite a massive cash advantage fueled in part by pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., the spending so far has failed to significantly shift Republicans’ fortunes as more money gets diverted toward races once counted on as comfortable wins.”
“People’s Action stands with Rep. Omar and all other people facing persecution and intimidation by this weak, corrupt president,” Arias added. “The damage Trump has done to all of us is too deep to hide with these distractions and deflections. Consequences are finally coming for him this November.”
