The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition has launched an ambitious effort to reclaim the Kingsbridge Armory – a dilapidated, 570,000-square-foot fortress built in 1917 a stone’s throw from Yankee Stadium, into a vibrant community hub with spaces for high-tech manufacturing, live performances, and affordable housing.

“We’ve been fighting back for a really long time,” Sandra Lobo, NWBCCC’s executive director, told The New York Times. “It’s time to fight forward.”

After leading a nine-month community outreach effort to find out what Bronx residents want and need, NWBCC led the creation of a $1 billion plan to redevelop the site, with up to 90,000 square feet for light industries like 3-D printing and carpentry, as well as both food stalls and a commercial kitchen to serve food-cart vendors and train culinary workers. Two nearby buildings will include 200 permanently affordable apartments.
