The People’s Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN) joined the Nevada Immigrant Coalition and Telemundo Las Vegas to host a town hall on July 23, which featured a live “Know Your Rights” training, to ensure community members remain safe amidst escalated and targeted arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the community.

Since April, communities in Nevada have been targeted for family separation, 287(g), a law which promoted collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE, was revived in Las Vegas, while the western part of the state has experienced mass raids and the deployment of armed forces in immigrant communities.

Because of uncertainty and lack of transparency, there has been increased anxiety over ICE activity in Las Vegas, including raids at Broadacres, a popular local swap meet, which had become an information clearinghouse for local residents.

“Our community is anxious and scared, but we are responding with facts, education, and empowerment,”  said Erika Castro, Organizing Director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada. “Our kids deserve safety, stability, and education — and we will continue showing up for them. But it does mean knowing your rights, sharing that knowledge with your children, and preparing your household for potential encounters with law enforcement or ICE. Empowerment through information is one of the best defenses we have.”

The town hall included community advocates, legal experts, labor leaders and a mental health expert, as well as a full “Know Your Rights” training. Highlights of the broadcast can be seen here.
