Americans from Across the Country Organized by People’s Action Institute Join Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to Denounce Proposed Cuts to the FY26 Budget That Could Force Record Numbers of Americans into Homelessness

Washington, D.C. – People at risk of losing their housing will be joined by U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) for a press event outside the Washington D.C. office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to denounce FY26 budget proposals that experts agree could force record numbers into homelessness through severe cuts to rental assistance following Donald Trump’s attack on renters’ rights.
Americans who will be harmed by these cuts have shared their stories with Members of Congress. Yesterday, a delegation of directly-impacted cost-burdened people engaged in nonviolent action during the F&26 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) subcommittee in the House.
Americans from every state want more affordable housing, not more people experiencing homelessness (as a result of unnecessary and unwanted HUD cuts).
VISUALS: Americans, including children, working adults, people with disabilities, from across the country from diverse generations, faith traditions, and ideologies rallying together.
WHAT: A group of directly impacted constituents struggling to afford housing staging with Members of Congress denouncing proposed HUD cuts and calling on their representatives to support investments in housing instead of tax breaks for billionaires.
WHO:
- Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.)
- Directly-impacted, housing cost-burdened working families and fixed income people who will be harmed by HUD cuts.
WHEN: Tuesday, July 15, 2025, 10:00 am Eastern
WHERE: U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Dev., 451 7th St SW, Washington, D.C. 20410
The national crisis is clear. Our nation has more people experiencing homelessness than ever recorded, with nearly 800,000 Americans living in streets or shelters, and 1.2 million children experiencing homelessness or “doubled up” homes occupied beyond capacity. More than 9 million people are at risk of losing their housing if proposed cuts to HUD are enacted. Over 21 million renters are rent burdened, roughly half of all renters.
