People’s Action Denounces Speaker Johnson’s Proposal to Slash Essentials for Working Families to Fund Tax Cuts for Corporations and Broligarch Billionaires like Musk

WASHINGTON, D.C. – People’s Action Executive Director Sulma Arias issued the following statement in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) budget proposal to gut services and programs that support seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and families with children to give those funds to wealth-hoarding corporations and greedy billionaires:
“Instead of fighting for us, Donald Trump, MAGA Republicans, and unelected billionaires like Elon Musk are hurting our families and our country so that they can steal our money and cut their own taxes. Americans do not want this.
We want billionaires and corporations to pay their fair share. We want the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court to put everyday people first.
Musk is unelected and unaccountable. And Americans didn’t elect Trump to rip away health care from tens of millions of Americans by gutting Medicaid and yanking away ACA health subsidies from working families. Most people didn’t vote for a plan to take essentials away from veterans, senior citizens, and cut nutrition assistance for hungry children in order to give more money to billionaires and multinational corporations.
This might be what Speaker Mike Johnson wants. But it’s not what he and his colleagues were sent to Washington D.C. to do. It’s time for Congress to do their job and prioritize Americans living paycheck-to-paycheck, not corporate and billionaire greed.
By organizing, we can stop this budget from becoming a reality.”
