Who has the courage to stand up for what is right? You do.
I know, because I’ve seen you – standing in the 105-degree heat of a Las Vegas street, demanding that Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission end the maximum daily charges that push families’ energy costs through the roof.
I’ve seen you stand up to CEOs inside the Edison Electric Institute’s annual summit, interrupting them to call out the hundreds of millions of dollars for-profit energy corporations – such as American Electric Power, NextEra Energy, and Berkshire Hathaway Energy – pay executives, while families across the country struggle to pay for electricity.
I’ve seen you marching in the streets on May Day, showing in thousands of cities and towns the force we can have when we all – students and teachers, families, immigrants and workers of every kind – unite and stand together, in every corner of this country.
And I’ve seen you stand with your neighbors – in Chicago and Minneapolis, Maine and Texas – to demand an end to the brutal violence inflicted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), which has stolen the lives of Johan Sebastián, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Silverio Villegas González, Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and many others whose names we do not yet know.
Your relentless courage, as you stand up to authorities who abuse power, as well as to the corporations and billionaires who enable them, is what always makes me proud of our People’s Action family. We will never stop to raise our voices for what is right, when it is right, and for each other.
Read on to learn more about bold actions our members are taking across the country, from North Carolina, where Down Home sent a dozen buses to the state capitol on May Day, to Arkansas, where the Public Policy Project collected more than a hundred thousand signatures to preserve direct democracy, to Chicago, where youth organizers from ONE Northside spoke out at Target to demand the company stop its cooperation with ICE and pay its fair share in taxes.
There is no question red lines are being crossed all around us, on what now seems to be a daily basis. When we see what is happening to our democracy, to our neighbors, and to working people, there is no question that we must organize now as never before. Yet when I see you, I know that together, we have the courage to see us through.
