Homes Guarantee on Midterms: Elections Pass but the Rent is Still Due

Contact: Johanna Kichton, [email protected], 202.660.0605

WASHINGTON, D.C. – People’s Action today released a statement by Homes Guarantee campaign director Tara Raghuveer in response to the midterm elections:

“Last night’s results show that people are hungry for action and a vision for rent stabilization. Tenants need to see their elected leaders fighting for them, and specifically fighting to alleviate their pain during this economic crisis.

“The White House has been silent on the biggest expense for poor and working families: their rent. This election made clear the economy and inflation were top concerns for voters. President Biden has an opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to tenants who are being squeezed as landlords make record profits.

“Now is the time for the Biden administration to do everything in their power through executive and agency-level action, to regulate the rent and fight for tenants.”

Last week, the Homes Guarantee campaign released an executive order to regulate rents. Polling from Data for Progress and Bipartisan Policy Center point to bipartisan voter support for federal action to mitigate rising housing costs.
