People’s Action to GOP Senators: Stop Pandering to Billionaires and Get Serious About Relief for the Other 328 Million Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today released the following statement from Sondra Youdelman, People’s Action Campaigns Director, urging Senate Republicans to stop dithering and start acting to provide real, just relief to Americans whose lives are being destroyed by the COVID-19 crisis.

“Senate Republicans continue to waste time on bailout measures for big corporations while their working-class constituents need immediate relief. Last week, 1.4 million people filed first-time unemployment claims, yet the top priority for GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his caucus is protecting companies who expose their workers and customers to COVID-19.

“Frankly, the mentality of the Republicans–who insist on reopening the economy before taking real action to make it safe to do so for workers, children, and families–is astonishing, even for them.

“Working class people, especially Black and Latinx families, are being disproportionately hurt by coronavirus and economic distress, need Republicans to stop pandering to billionaires and get serious about protecting the general welfare of the other 328 million Americans.

“Democrats have proposed a number of relief measures that, while not perfect, would provide essential support for people whose lives are being destroyed by the crisis created by Trump’s incompetence. The Senate needs to pass these measures now and then immediately join progressive leaders in the House in crafting a real People’s Bailout to get us out of this mess in a full and just way.”
