The People’s Wave Arrives in D.C. – Now Through Tuesday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nearly a thousand progressive grassroots activists from around the country are gathering in Washington D.C. on April 28-30 for the People’s Action “The People’s Wave” convention to hear from speakers, attend workshops and then hit the streets for some surprise site visits.

Keynote speakers include Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Ro Khanna, Alicia Garza. and Rep. Pramila Jayapal.

“The road to 2020 is an incredible opportunity for progressives to articulate a bold vision that inspires us to believe again in a democracy that is of, by and for the people,” Rep. Jayapal said.

“People’s Action is taking back the mic and putting it in the hands of people who are the bedrock of America,” Jayapal said. “The People’s Wave represents the power of community leaders, activists, and organizers who are determined to make change and take back our country; and I am honored to be a part of this moment.”

People’s Action is one of the largest and the fastest growing multiracial, progressive organizations in the country with 48 member organizations in 32 states, with more than a million grassroots leaders.

“I’m always inspired to see so many people speak truth to power and raise a ruckus,” says George Goehl, director of People’s Action.

Convention participants will vote on a people’s platform and layout a plan to make it reality. They’ll hear from other grassroots activists from around the country and keynote speakers. Then they’ll hit the streets.

Keynote speakers:

Sunday evening:

Alicia Garza, co-founder of Black Lives Matter. Last year she founded the Black Futures Lab, which works to make black people powerful in politics.

Mandela Barnes is Wisconsin’s first African American Lt. Governor and a member of Citizen Action Wisconsin (part of the People’s Action Network)

Monday morning:

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. A progressive leader in congress, she was the founder of OneAmerica, part of the People’s Action network.

Tuesday morning:

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. His career centers on the fight for racial, economic, social and environmental justice, including reducing massive income and wealth gaps.

Rep. Ro Khanna from California’s Silicon Valley, first vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Jumaane Williams, newly elected New York City Public Advocate, provides a direct link between the public and city government. Williams is the former executive director of New York State Tenants & Neighbors.
