Trump immigration orders desecrate our shared principles

Today, Donald Trump signed executive actions to build a wall along the southern border, create a deportation force, and exact retribution against sanctuary cities. President Trump is also expected to order a Muslim ban, in the form of an immigration ban targeted at several majority Muslim countries, and a shutdown of our country’s refugee program.

Mehrdad Azemun, campaigns director for People’s Action, issued the following statement:

“On Saturday, millions of us poured into the streets from Barrow, Alaska, to Washington, D.C., to Tallahassee, Florida, to rise up together and proclaim unity in the face of Donald Trump’s hatred and division.

Now, an embittered Donald Trump is lashing out against the values that unite us. He has signed multiple executive orders building his foolish wall on our southern border, creating a deportation force, and exacting retribution against sanctuary cities that protect all their residents.

Trump is also expected to order a shutdown of our refugee program and institute a Muslim ban. The people of America do not support these unpopular actions.

These orders desecrate our shared principles of equality, justice, and religious freedom. Millions of us marched for a country that believes in the dignity of each person and offers hope and freedom. We stand with immigrants and refugees, who have always been part of the fabric of our country. We call on mayors and governors to affirm and create sanctuaries for all their communities. We call on Congress to affirm the United States as a place of refuge,”

Mehrdad Azemun is the campaigns director at People’s Action. His family immigrated from Iran to the United States in the late 1970s.
